Some of my favorite colors in the sky are found on the western horizon at sunrise, and the eastern horizon at sunset. The blue immediately above the horizon is a phenomenon called “Earth shadow” because it is atmosphere that has been darkened by earth’s shadow. The pink band immediately above that is the “Venus belt” and is that color because of backscatter on the opposite horizon, much like the “alpenglow” phenomenon. It can be difficult to look away from the side where the actual sunrise or sunset is happening, but you should do it because it’s the only place you’ll ever see this.
